I'm up to something...

This roller coaster of a year has really made me reflect on life, love, family, and friendships. I posted a while back about how I was pondering the direction of this blog. I have to admit, I have never really been happy with it. I knew this blog wasn't the best it could be. It wasn't going in the right direction. I could easily try to amp it up, change things, get it back on track but I realize that this is not where my heart lies. Due to circumstances, my vision was clouded and my blog neglected. But I want to say thank you to the readers who stuck in there with me. I appreciate it more than you will ever know.

I have always been a creative person. In love with all things design related: fashion, interiors, art, etc. Over the past few months I realized that I will always need a creative outlet in my life. I have something planned, a huge transition of sorts. I will still be maintaining a blog, but it will transition into something so much more. Get ready, I'm up to something, and I hope you will follow along with me.

I absolutely love the new logo that was created for my new endeavor. It's modern, fresh, and feminine. And it features my favorite color magenta (isn't is a happy color?!) and my real initials. No more hiding behind the mysterious "Mrs. B.". The "B" actually stands for my married name, had I actually changed it! So, I'm coming out of the closet, so to speak, to let you know who I am and what I will be up to. It will be fun, creative, and beautiful...so stay tuned. In the meantime, I will still continue to post here, albeit sporadically, until the new project is ready to be unveiled in the next few months.

I had my first hug from Mr. B since March 1.
It was heavenly....
And when I started to pull away he said "come back", hugged me again and kissed me.
I rested my head on his chest as he lay in his hospital bed and let him hug me again.
He melted my heart....

Retail Therapy

As you can imagine from my previous post, to say that I am stressed is an understatement. So after leaving my daily visit to the hospital this evening, I stopped off to grab some Chipotle take-out for dinner and headed into the HomeGoods store across the parking lot for a little retail therapy. It was well worth the trip because I scored a fabulous Ralph Lauren tufted ottoman from the Avalon Collection. I am giddy with excitement. It retails for $879; I paid $299. I have a perfect place for it in the living room which is the next room I will be working on after I finish the bedroom. I have a plan for it already in place!

I obviously wasn't planning on buying any furniture tonight so I kept my fingers crossed hoping that the darn thing would fit in the front seat of my BMW. It barely fit. If it were one inch larger, I probably would have had to tie it to the roof of the car! The pictures look pathetic, I know, but I had to use my camera phone.

On the Ralph Lauren website the Avalon Cocktail Ottoman is shown in two colors: the soft blue/grey (which I purchased) and a beautiful sunflower yellow.

Sorry for the silence, dear readers. When I started this blog I had good intentions. Really, I did. Please keep reading....because I have a challenge for you!

Several years ago I started a separate blog that focused on travel, home decor and fashion. I loved it. And my readership and subscription level was successful by my standards. My day job is rather uncreative at times and the blog was the perfect way to let my creative expression shine through. Sounds cliche, but true. However, the blog turned into a lot of work. The dreaded four letter word "WORK". Sourcing images and coming up with new and creative topics can, at times, be challenging particularly with a full-time job and a two hour daily commute. After much thought I decided to stop that particular blog to relieve myself of the added stress it became. I wanted it to be fun not stressful.

Fast forward to late Fall 2010. I was walking along the beach with Mr. B one sunny morning and we were discussing blogs. He has always been so supportive of my blogs...and any other crazy endeavor I come up with. He is absolutely my biggest fan. And it was during this time together that I decided I was going to start blogging again. However, what I soon realized is that timing is everything. Shortly after I started my new blog, Dining and Decor, I had minor surgery. Once I recovered, I cared for my mother who also needed surgery. Then Mr. B became critically ill. From that point on my blog came to a screeching halt. Actually, my entire life came to a screeching halt. No exaggeration. Although I have taken a long pause from blogging, I continue to sit at Mr. B's beside with pen and paper at hand. Old school, I guess. But I began to journal the ups and downs of his ordeal and what my daily life has become as he lay in the hospital fighting for his dear life. He has been on death's door on more than one occasion. His ups and downs are my good and bad days. And my little green spiral bound journal is a good way to capture those moments of time while sharing the darkest hours of our lives together. Throughout this ordeal, I have had a tremendous amount of support from family and friends. My relationships have grown deeper and fonder with my loved ones. And with some, I have had to break off relationships spanning approximately 20 years. An easy decision, really. Because what I realized during this extremely difficult time is that I need to be surrounded by emotionally healthy and supportive people who can give a little of themselves to help a friend when they most need it. Enough said.

What I learned through the bedside journaling is how therapeutic it has been. And for some odd reason, it made me think of my blog. Do I discontinue it and forget about blogging? Maybe take it in a new direction? Maybe not? Do I just start over from scratch? A clean slate so to speak.

This entire ordeal has forever changed my life. And something good will come out of it. I just know it...

Planning a Nursery

Babies are precious. I love their fresh scent, and their adorable little fingers and toes. They are a gift. And when my best friend is told that she has been blessed with a gift times two, it's time to get the nursery in order. And this isn't just any nursery. I'm talking about a nursery for twins: a boy and a girl. Talk about hitting the baby jackpot! Trying to design a nursery for mixed sexes is challenging but I think we are off to a decent start. We have to work around freshly painted yellow walls and dark wood furniture from Pottery Barn that was inherited. Not too shabby! Nothing "cartoon-y" was the request, but chic with a modern flair is what the soon to be parents are looking for. I thought it would be a challenge to find something that fit the bill but I immediately thought of Serena & Lily. Their nursery bedding is nothing short of fabulous. And I love the fact that they offer matching paint colors and fabric by the yard for any extra coordinating pieces you may need to have made.

It will be interesting to see how the room comes together....

It's all about details

Did you read the recent post over at Beach Bungalow 8? The post is about a chair with a rather unique detail- the ring pull on the back of the chair. And maybe not so unique anymore as this detail is seeming to pop up more and more frequently. I first fell in love with it a few years ago when Italian architect Michele Bonan designed JK Place Capri. Both photos are Bonan designs and this little detail seems to be one of his signatures.

The question posed to readers on Megan's blog was whether or not you like this particular chair detail. The comments were a mixed bag. Here is how I responded:

Megan's post got me thinking in general about details in design. Details are very important to me and I will fret over the smallest feature. I never overlook them because they can make all the difference. You know, the difference between "wow" and "woooow".

Here are a few design details that I absolutely love. From these photos you can see how they add interest or in some cases actually make the piece.

Ribbon and nailhead trim. The space between the nailheads shows off the pretty pink ribbon.

Button detail.

Contrast welting.

Drapery detail in my office. I added a Windsor Smith fabric ("Purpose") to a pair of off-the rack drapery panels for a custom look.

So, my dear readers, I will leave you with this quote from Ludwig Mies van der Rohe:

Weekend Entertainment

It's been way to long since I have been to movie theater. Seriously. I'm talking years. But "The Tourist" tempted me. The beautiful costumes and the breathtaking backdrop intrigued me. The majority of the movie is set in Venice, Italy so how could I resist?

The costumes and the scenery did not disappoint. In fact, it made me long to be back in Italy. I was in Venice last year so I couldn't help but say to myself during the movie "I've been there" or "I've seen that" on more than one occasion. I also fell in love with the classic modern style of Jolie's character, "Elise". It turns out that Ferragamo designed the beautiful nude "Elise" shoe for the movie two heel heights, as well as with and without platforms, depending on the scene. If you want to take home your very own beige suede and/or black leather versions of the "Elise," complete with metal heel, they are being sold in limited release in select stores worldwide coinciding with the launch of the film this past December. You better hurry though....I just might beat you to it!

The scenes in the lobby of the Danieli Hotel was actually a set. But I can tell you it was just as gorgeous as the real thing. And the featured Doges Suite is actually in a different building! Ah, the magic of the movies!

I can't think of anything more magical than a coctail or late night dining on the Grand Canal.

Several years ago I fell in love with a photograph in a magazine. I wish I would have scanned that picture. It featured a beautiful dining room with an oversized antique balance scale prominently sitting on a sideboard like a precious sculpture. I can't explain what the allure was but it was love at first sight. Every time I walk into an antique shop I keep my eyes peeled for a beautiful balance scale ever since seeing that picture. I have seen a few since then but not many. And none that took my breath away as the one in the picture did.

While Christmas shopping a few weeks ago I walked passed Z Gallerie. Their window display stopped me dead in my tracks. There it was- a beautiful modern balance scale. It made my heart swoon. I chose not to purchase it due to its grand scale (29.5" wide by 37" tall). The scale is actually a good thing. But a statement piece such as this needs to be in just the right place. I don't think I have a spot in our home that would do this piece justice.

Fast forward to this afternoon. I was thumbing through the January 2011 issue of Real Simple and there was an article that caught my eye. This was the title:

"Love it but not sure what to do with it? Armed with know-how and a bit of courage you can make even the most intimidating objects...blend seamlessly into your home...".

This article automatically made me think about the modern balance scale. Was it meant to be?

Drapery Walls in the Bedroom

Can you see a trend in my posting these last few days? Bedroom design is on my mind.

Windows in a bedroom can sometimes be tricky. It's typically unorthodox to place a bed in front of a window. But what happens when this is the only wall where it actually makes sense to place the bed? This is the case in our home. I have been considering doing wall-to-wall drapes, a small departure from what was specified by KD Space where shades are also incorporated. Our room is fairly small and I think the wall-to-wall look will be very theatrical. But not in an over-the-top kind of way. I think it will make the room feel like a cozy cocoon.

Using On-line Interior Design Services

I really can't go any further posting about my bedroom design without saying thanks to Katie of Katie Denham Interiors. Katie has a delightful blog called Katiedid and offers KD Space, an on-line interior design service. If you are in the Sacramento area she also provides traditional design services.

You must know that early last year I solicited KD Space for my bedroom re-do. I gave Katie a few requirements:

(1) Work around a fabric I love (shown on the drawings as no. 13).
(2) Incorporate lots of storage.
(3) Provide options for a non-upholstered bed.

Katie put 2 designs schemes together for my bedroom. Although I love each of the 2 options she presented me with you'll notice as the room comes together that I am using her designs as inspiration. That's what I love about using an on-line design service. You can put your room together identically as the designer specified or use bits and pieces. You have tons of flexibility. Now a days, there are many designers offering similar services but Katie was a pleasure to work with. She was quick to respond and her fee was very affordable. Most importantly, I love her creativity. If you ever have considered using an on-line design service I would highly recommend it. Working with a designer is a collaborative effort. They can help you put together a cohesive design and prevent you from making some costly mistakes.

Bedroom Makeover

Have you heard the phrase "It gets worse before it gets better"? A water leak prompted us to move up our bedroom re-do to the top of the list. A blessing in disguise? I would say so.

I hate picking paint colors. You can pull together the most beautiful fabrics and finishes but if the basics, like paint, are not right it can throw off the whole look of a room. Like you missed the mark. Not a good thing. After testing six Benjamin Moore paints, I actually decided to go with "Latte" from Restoration Hardware. It was actually the first paint sample I put up on the wall. I always tend to circle back to my first choice. And it drives Mr. B crazy (sorry!). I guess I like to see all my options before making a selection so I have no regrets.

Carpet selected. Check. Paint selected. Check. Next up are fabrics. I decided to go with a rather monochromatic look and here is a sampling of some of the fabrics I considered. Not all of these will be used. And there are a few not included here. You will have to stay tuned to see which were selected and which didn't make the cut.

The morning after....

The story behind the photo goes like this. Mr. B. and I stayed at The Four Seasons Biltmore in Santa Barbara, California last New Year's weekend. We were up bright and early on New Years Day to take a walk around the property and surrounding neighborhood. It was a cold, foggy morning. And it was quiet and so very peaceful. It was on this walk that we spotted this party hat; a remnant of the previous night's festivities. It looked as if someone took great care in strategically placing it on top of a tall hedge. I hope whoever it belonged to had a great year.

As we start this New Year I wish you all the very best. I hope your 2011 is filled with love, joy, peace, prosperity, friends, and family. Let's make 2011 the best yet!

The Fall of 2009 and 2010 were not the best times of my life. It was a very complex time for me. Seeing this pillow yesterday put a huge smile on my face. And its available in orange, red, and black.

Although the phrase embroidered on the pillow struck a chord with me, I definitely realize that when all is said and done I have a lot to be thankful for. I really am blessed...

Affordable finds

Open any design magazine or browse thorough almost any design blog and you will most likely see some version of the starburst mirror. I have always been a fan of the starburst mirror. And when I found this beauty with a convex mirror a few months ago at Homegoods for only $30 I couldn't pass it up. So, I followed the advice of many: "If you love it you will find a place for it".

The mirror is patiently sitting in my home office on the floor underneath my desk. The installation will be a bit tricky because it will not sit flush with the wall. The mirror will actually be layered over the corners of four pictures already hanging on the wall.

I went to Homegoods today and here are a few other things that caught my eye. Unfortunately, none of them made their way home with me. But it was fun shopping. The hunt is always exciting!

Avia Hotel

Last week I checked into the Avia Hotel in Long Beach, California, a new addition to the City as it is only one year old. I absolutely fell in love with the modern design of this boutique hotel. If you are looking for a simple, yet stylish boutique hotel then the Avia is the perfect alternative to the corporate hotels in the City's downtown. With respect to amenities, the hotel is simple: no valet parking, no room service and no luggage assistance. I am assuming that they can keep their room rates competitive by not providing these services.

There is a beautiful restaurant and bar on-site. The restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner and there are literally dozens of restaurant choices within a 5 minute walk of the hotel. You won't go hungry here! The roof-top pool is an amazing feature of the eight story hotel available only to hotel guests (key card access) or non-guests for a fee. It boasts amazing views of the Long Beach Harbor including the Queen Mary. Another plus is that it is conveniently located to the convention center if that's the reason you are in town.

As much as I loved my stay at the Avia, and as much as it pains me to put this in writing, there was one downside to my stay and it has to do with providing a consistent level of quality service. Several staff were outstanding and went above and beyond while others provided me with wrong or inadequate information that left me feeling a little frustrated. But overall, I had a wonderful stay in a comfortable suite and would not hesitate to stay here again.

Dreaming....a stone cabin and hot apple cider

I fell in love with this cozy stone cabin in the mountains. Doesn't it look like a story book vacation retreat? The only thing I would change is the color of the door. I would paint it red.....

This picture automatically made me think of drinking hot cider in front of the roaring stone fireplace while snuggled under a nice warm blanket. Ahhhh.....

Hot Apple Cider

Ingredients (serves 6)

6 cups apple cider

1/4 cup real maple syrup
2 cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
6 whole allspice berries
1 orange peel, cut into strips
1 lemon peel, cut into strips

Directions

1. Pour the apple cider and maple syrup into a large stainless steel saucepan.

2. Place the cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice berries, orange peel and lemon peel in the center of a square of cheesecloth; fold up the sides of the cheesecloth to enclose the bundle, then tie it up with a length of kitchen string. Or better yet, use a cheesecloth bag. Drop the spice bundle into the cider mixture.

3. Place the saucepan over moderate heat for 5 to 10 minutes, or until the cider is very hot but not boiling.

4. Remove the cider from the heat. Discard the spice bundle. Ladle the cider into big cups or mugs, adding a fresh cinnamon stick to each serving, if desired.

Kitchen Design

Mr. B and I are in the process of redesigning our home. It is a slow process and we'll be taking one room at time. I haven't thought much about the kitchen until recently. And the one thing Mr. B and I have agreed on loving is a white kitchen. A contrast from what we have now: black cabinetry. Black cabinetry is so in vogue now but we need a change. To mix it up, if you will. Plus white looks so clean, sophisticated and timeless. I envision white cabinetry, dark grey paint, white marble countertops and a white marble backsplash in a herringbone pattern. I was giddy with joy when I saw Cabinet Designer Christopher Peacock's own kitchen. His reality is my dream!

The kitchen below is another one of my favorites by Connecticut Interior Designer Lee Ann Thornton. I have been an admirer of her designs for a long time and I love her attention to detail. Lee Ann use to live in Los Angeles where she designed children's rooms before moving back East where she opened her design firm in 2003. I sure wish she was still in Los Angeles because I would love to collaborate with her on a new kitchen!

It has been a hectic ~~week~~ month and besides a wonderful dinner planned for tonight, I have the whole day free. Sometimes the best things are spur of the moment. Let's see what the day holds for me! Hmm...what shall I do today.......

Pancake Bar and Citrus Pancakes

The story behind these photos goes like this. Girl meets Boy. Girl and Boy have first date over a pancake meal. Girl and Boy decide to get married and have a "Breakfast at Sunset" themed wedding that included a pancake bar. Pancake Bar = fun brunch idea to ~~steal~~ borrow someday. Just add different types of syrup, fresh fruit, fresh squeezed orange juice and mimosa's and viola you have yourself an instant breakfast brunch. Talk about a great way to start the day!

I want to go a step further and try a new recipe. Citrus Pancakes sound like yummy goodness plus they also seem easy to make. If you try them before I do please let me know how they turn out. I hope they are delicious.

Citrus Pancakes

Makes 12, 4-inch pancakes

3 cups pancake batter of your choice
Zest of 2 lemons, 2 limes, or 1 orange (your choice depending on the type of pancakes you want)
2/3 fresh whole milk-ricotta cheese
Peanut oil (for the griddle)
Butter (for griddle and serving)
Warm Grade B Maple Syrup (for serving)*

* Who knew there were different grades of maple syrup? Grade B is a dark syrup. Apparently there is a rating system!

Preparation
1. Stir the pancake batter and zest together in a bowl.
2. Ever so gently fold in the ricotta cheese. Take care not to destroy its texture.
3. Prepare the griddle.
4. Drop the pancake batter on the griddle according to the instructions and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until bubbles appear on almost the entire surface of the pancakes.
5. Turn and very gently tap the pancakes with a metal spatula to make them uniform in thickness.
6. Cook until second side is golden, about 2 minutes, and serve on A-side up.
7. Enjoy your delicious goodness! (I added this one...)

I think having a set of cotton or linen cocktail napkins should be in everyone's linen closet or displayed on a really cool bar cart, a popular design trend these days. You can go the traditional monogram route, which I am a fan of. Or have fun and incorporate your favorite motif. Such a small detail goes a long way. Scenic Dining in Rome: Aroma at the Palazzo Manfredi

Italy is always on my mind. Always. There is no place I would rather be. Really. It has been a few years since I have have been to Rome but next time I am there I definitely want to check out the roof top restaurant, Aroma, at the 16 room Palazzo Manfredi Roma hotel. The Aroma restaurant has the most stunning view in Rome over looking the Colosseum. Doesn't it look like the perfect place to have a meal? I am sure I can linger here for hours. With a backdrop as stunning as the Colosseum, why would anyone ever want to leave?!

The hotel is owned by Counts Gofredo and Leonardo Manfredi and has recently undergone a renovation. The colors and design of the new hotel and restaurant respect the history of such a historic area while providing new life to the hotel.

Today is officially the first day of Fall. And I couldn't be more excited. Fall means pulling out the sweaters, drinking hot cider, and snuggling...to name a few! I only wish I lived in an area that experiences true seasons. Here in Los Angeles they just sort of blend together.

In early October I will be heading up to the mountains for an extended weekend trip with my girl pals. It has turned into an annual ritual that I look forward to each year. I always have such a good time just handing out with the girls. No husbands or kids allowed! With the mountains on my mind I though I would share a couple of fabulous retreats. From My Desk to Yours...

If you read yesterday's post carefully you already knew that this post was coming.

Here is my office space at home...it is a work in progress. It is one of my favorite spaces! I share an office with Mr. B. and his desk is on the opposite side of the room. His side of the office has a completely different vibe than mine. Think mid century modern...and it's way cool. Fortunately, the two styles mesh very well. The room is almost complete. We just need to finish the cabinetry and a few minor details.

I hope you enjoy a glimpse inside our home.

I love having fresh flowers on my desk.

The painting was a "get well gift" from Mr. B a few years back. I have never framed it because it has moved around the house a few times. However, I think it has found a permanent home now. One of my pen/pencil holders is actually a YSL make-up brush display from a now defunct I.Magnin store. The clock is from Pottery Barn. The little red book is one of my favorite desktop accessories. It is actually a Berlitz English/Italian dictionary from the 1950's.

I found this brooch at a flea market and knew I had to have it. I definitely couldn't pass it up since it only cost a buck or two. I love the detail of the embossed leather and stylish gold monogram. I will never actually wear the brooch so it sits on my monogrammed notepad...it found a new life as a paper weight.

I had a lumbar pillow made for my desk chair with an oversized chenille houndstooth pattern. I love the fun, graphic look of the design. It keeps things from looking too serious.

A Life of Style with Rebecca Moses

Fashion designer Rebecca Moses has come back to the United States after spending many years in Italy. Her return is marked with the release of her first book "A Life of Style" and new collection for her fashion line Heart Soul Style.

I just received the new book entitled "A Life of Style" when lo and behold the October issue of House Beautiful arrived on my doorstep. Talk about perfect timing! House Beautiful did a wonderful 4 page spread featuring the new book. If I had not already seen the book the magazine article alone would have made me run out to buy it.

Each page of A Life of Style is wonderfully illustrated with Rebecca's own whimsical watercolors featuring topics such as fashion, home, and entertaining. The book is light-hearted but is meant to inspire. Rebecca takes you on a voyage of her own style journey while encouraging you to find your own.

In the chapter entitled "What Defines a Home" Rebecca Moses states:

"Some people say home is where the heart is. I say home is where there is heart, soul, and style."

Rebecca asks the question, "Are you a Desk-Setter?" and identifies the various types of writing spaces. I am not quite sure if I fall into any of these categories. Maybe you can figure it out for me. Hmmmm....sounds like a hint to an upcoming post, perhaps?

Rebecca Moses incorporated a fairy tale backdrop featuring oversized books and her fanciful drawings at Fashion Week in New York last week. This marks the debut of her Spring 2011 ready to wear line.

Mr. B and I have this beautiful set of neo-classical silverware reserved for special occassions. But maybe we should pull the good stuff out and enjoy it everyday. Barefoot Contessa: How Easy is That?

Over the weekend I received the October issue of Glamour Magazine. Buried at the back of the magazine was a 3 page article entitled "How to Do Anything Better Guide" featuring the new cookbook by Ina Garten due out on October 26. The article, also available here, features 4 easy recipes from the book that even I could make. And that is saying a lot!

One of the recipes included in the upcoming book is White Chocolate Bark. This is one recipe I am definitely going to try. When I think of chocolate bark I usually think of the chocolate peppermint version which I am not particularly a fan of. However, I like Ina's version....particularly loving the fall colors of this dessert.

White Chocolate Bark
1/2 cup whole shelled salted pistachios
16 oz. good white chocolate, finely chopped
1/4 cup dried cranberries
1/4 cup medium-diced dried apricots

Step 1.

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Using a pencil, draw an 8” x 10” rectangle on a piece of parchment paper. Turn the parchment paper over so the pencil mark doesn’t get on the chocolate, and place it on a sheet pan.

Step 2.
Place the pistachios in one layer on another sheet pan and bake for 8 minutes. Set aside to cool.

Step 3.

Place three quarters of the white chocolate in a heatproof glass bowl, and put it in the microwave on high for 30 seconds. (Time it with your watch for accuracy.) Stir the chocolate with a rubber spatula, return it to the microwave for another 30 seconds, then stir again. Continue to heat and stir in 30-second intervals until the chocolate is just melted. Immediately stir in the remaining chocolate and allow it to sit at room temperature, stirring often, until it’s completely smooth. (If you need to heat it a little more, put it in the microwave for another 15 seconds.)

Step 4.

Pour the melted chocolate onto the parchment paper and spread it lightly to fill the drawn rectangle. Sprinkle the top evenly with the cooled pistachios, the cranberries and apricots. Press the nuts and fruit lightly so they will set in the chocolate. Set aside for at least 2 hours until firm, or refrigerate for 20 minutes. Cut or break the bark into 16 pieces and serve at room temperature. Makes 16 pieces.

Bottega Veneta: Let them dress your nest

Bottega Veneta is one of my favorites for leather goods. And if money were no object, I would have Bottega Veneta dress my nest. Or at least my tabletop. Here are a few images from the Fall/Winter 2010/11 catalog.

A few years back, Bottega Veneta collaborated with German porcelain manufacturer Koenigliche Porzellan-Manufaktur, also know as KPM.

"Every piece is shaped by hand and meticulously hand-painted with a border inspired by Bottega Veneta's signature intrecciato weave. This year, Bottega Veneta and KPM have expanded the collection, adding new items including breakfast settings with complete coffee and tea services. Deep bowls have also been added to enhance the functionality of the line." - via Bottega Veneta.

Although the following two pictures are not food or dining related I had a hard time not including them because I thought they were just so fabulous. They have an urban but slightly masculine feel which I am particularly drawn to these days.

Scott's Seafood Restaurant & Bar

I typically don't go to seafood restaurants because I don't like fish. However, I do enjoy shellfish. Bring on the shrimp, crab, lobster, and scallops any day. I have passed by Scott's Seafood Restaurant & Bar in Orange County, California countless times over the years but have never dined there until a few days ago. I went with an open mind not knowing what to expect and of course I carefully looked over their menu on-line before venturing out. After all, I wanted to make sure there was something on the menu that I would enjoy. I have to admit I was amazed at the impeccable service and delicious food. The meal was amazing and the presentation was beautiful. We can't wait to go back.

The dining room of the restaurant has a very coastal chic, comfortable feel with a mix of tables and booths. I thought that the leather on what could be an ordinary rattan dining chair was a nice design touch. Obviously, a design well thought out.

The restaurant also has a dedicated lounge known as The Murano Bar. It is appropriately named after the Murano glass chandelier, a focal point of the room. The Murano Bar has a completely different vibe: chic and completely modern.

Roasted Maine sea scallops with salsa verde and evo emulsion.

Truffle mac and cheese. Total comfort food.

Dark chocolate brick with roasted bananas, carmel, praline crunch, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Isn't this so very sculptural?

Homemade crepe hankerchiefs with oranges, agave nectar, grand marnier, and marscapone cheese.

Interview with Andrew Morrow

In yesterday's post I mentioned how much I enjoy frequenting the lobby of the St. Regis Hotel in San Francisco. A huge part of my fascination with the hotel has always been the artwork. The focal point of the lobby lounge are two large scale paintings by Canadian artist Andrew Morrow. The paintings, entitled "Love" and "War", each measure 8 feet tall by 16 feet wide and are always a topic of conversation between Mr. B and myself. For example, (and I'm embarrassed to say) I thought there was a headless horseman in the "War" painting only to realize a few months ago that the rider is not headless but is instead looking down. It's funny how each time I look at the paintings I see something new.

Andrew Morrow was gracious enough to answer a few questions about his artwork and I am thrilled to share the interview with you. You can also check out his website here.

What inspires you as an artist?

Most of my inspiration comes from the art world or contemporary image culture. Painters are always in dialogue with their medium, but as a representational artist (someone who paints things that look like things), I'm also very interested in the images of our time. At the moment, I'm spending a lot time looking at pastoral ideals and sexually charged imagery. There is also a completely unforeseeable component to inspiration, this is the cliché of the lightning bolt striking from any place, at any time. This is a very real thing.

What was your inspiration for the “Love” and “War” paintings displayed in the lobby of the St. Regis Hotel in San Francisco?

At the time, I'd been working on what I had called "War Paintings". These were large-scale, apocalyptic battle scenes. I knew that James Robertson, the art consultant in charge of the hotel's collection, wanted my work, but with a little less confrontation. James had decided the scale, 8'x16', and the number of paintings, 2, but mostly, the rest was up to me. I came up with the idea of two paintings that could work in opposition with another, and thus "Love" and "War". However, I'm not generally comfortable with binarisms as my universe is filled with grays, so conceptually, the paintings parallel, and overlap one another. "War", presents one side of a battle, but with humour and beauty. "Love" depicts a swirling, Baroque, bacchanal, with small moments of conflict emerging from time to time. The paintings, exhibited across from one another, present compositional mirror images of one another. Because of the scale and prominence of the works and the targeted audience of the hotel, there was an exhaustive editorial process, leading to the paintings as they are today. I remember sending an initial sketch in, and getting notes back saying that there shouldn't be any "rats", or "dogs" in the work. The rat was actually a mongoose. The dog, was, well, a dog.

What can we expect next from Andrew Morrow? Can you talk about any upcoming projects?

I'm currently working on a massive painting to be exhibited in a museum show here in my hometown of Ottawa. I'm also creating works for the upcoming Art Fair in Toronto. After this, I travel to Europe for 5 weeks on a research scholarship. Following that, I'm back home, working on a video project which will be screened in March of 2010. I've got more demand for my work that I can possibly keep up with these days. It would be nice to have a clone or two in the studio. Or at least an army of talented monkeys.

What are 5 things you couldn’t live without?

What can't I live without? The logistician in me would say air, water, food, etc., but this doesn't really say much does it? Family for sure, I'd be lost without my family. I also really like my bike. And art. I need my time alone too, this makes life bearable. Let's lump in all those life-sustaining elements, like food and air in the fifth spot. I need these too.

St. Regis Hotel (San Francisco)

The exterior of the St. Regis Hotel in San Francisco is rather unassuming and discreet. In fact, unless you are actually looking for the hotel you can easily walk right past it. However, if you are lucky enough to step foot inside you will find that there is a whole other world waiting for you. The public areas on the ground floor are very sophisticated and chic without being pretentious. Think lots of zebrawood paneling, herringbone wood floor and lots of reflective surfaces like glass and mirror. Oh yeah, and who can forget the amazing glass chandelier above the bar. It's gorgeous. Overall the hotel is very comfortable and the bar service in the lobby is always impeccable. Mr. B and I try to jet set up to San Francisco at least once per month. We joke that it is our home away from home. The bar at the St. Regis is always on our list of places to stop by. It's an oasis in the middle of the city.

More on the St. Regis tomorrow. Stay tuned for something really special.

My drink of choice at the St. Regis: the "Ginger Pom Cosmo" made with ginger beer and pomegranate juice. It's no longer on their drink menu but just ask for it and they will be happy to make it for you.

Don't feel like you have to come to the bar just for cocktails because the food is pretty amazing. The sweet corn chowder had me wanting more.

The pork bun trio satisfied my craving for dim sum. These are fairly new to the menu and are incredibly delicious.

It was the cake's fault...

What I am about to say may shock those who do not know me. I do not cook. There. I said it. It's on the table and out in the open. To say I have never cooked is unfair. But I can count the number of times I have cooked on one hand. No exaggeration. In some cases the food came out great (roast pork tacos) and in other cases it was pure disaster (baked pasta casserole). Needless to say, Mr. B and I eat out a lot.

I read a story in the LA Times entitled "Historic Appeal" that talked about Valerie Gordon of Valerie Confections who attempted to recreate the Grapefruit Cake from the now defunct historic Brown Derby Restaurant in Hollywood. Gordon's recipe accompanies the article which states that she "...worked hard to research the confection’s history. Eventually, she honed in on a recipe that both honors the spirit of the classic while adding new vitality with fresh ingredients."

The photo of the grapefruit cake in all its pastel glory called to me. The article intrigued me. And it got me thinking, as it did with Valerie, about other historic recipes that were lost at the close of many other legendary L.A. restaurants. So what happens when you are home recuperating from surgery? With the internet and a credit card you go shopping. And that is exactly what I did. I located a couple of vintage cookbooks and at the click of a button later they will be arriving on my doorstep in a few days. My goal is to make that grapefruit cake. Maybe it will inspire so much more. Maybe it won't. I will keep you posted.

Wishful Thinking

This may be optimistic but I am hoping I will be feeling well enough to travel a few days after my surgery even though my doctor said to expect a week to recover. I figure if I won't feel up to doing much of anything, how about doing nothing at a fabulous resort. However, I don't know if going back to work with a tan after being off sick for surgery is such a good idea. Probably not.

Last year I spent some time at the Four Seasons in Scottsdale, Arizona. Surprisingly, it was one of the best trips I had. I swam under the stars, hiked up a mountain at 5 am in a million degree heat, went to the spa almost daily, and slept like it was going out of style. I think I even read a book or two. I haven't read one since. I always considered myself to be one who likes active vacations. Who knew I would actually enjoy doing absolutely nothing.

In Need of Comfort Food

Soup is definitely a comfort food. And that is what I will be needing over the next week since I will be having surgery tomorrow. I have been very apprehensive about the surgery for the last few weeks and I just want to hurry up and get it done. When I started this blog, I wanted to post pretty pictures...not bore you with the details of my problems. After all, I am sure you have your own things to worry or be concerned about.

Sweet Treats

Mr. B and I walked past a cupcake shop this weekend. I could not walk by the window without stopping and looking at these sweet little treats. I never really got into the whole cupcake craze but I do think that these edible delights look inviting. And once we walked passed the shop I wondered....is the cupcake craze at its peak? Has it fizzled out already? Does it depend on what part of the country you are in?

Pretty in Pink

Mr. B and I have not entertained in a long while since our place in the midst of being redone, renovated and redecorated....one room at a time. However, seeing this tablescape with the bright pink tablecloth makes me want to have a party for my gal pals. I envision us sitting around the table talking, laughing, gossiping (did I just say that?) eating, and just having a plain 'ol good time.

Tell me...when was the last time you entertained? Did your party have a theme? Do you like entertaining or do you consider it just too much work?

This is a tablescape from a Georgetown, Washington DC. boutique. I fell in love with the color and the oversized red lantern. The setting is classic and clean, yet very feminine. This color of pink makes me feel happy.

These flowers were find from a recent farmers market visit. I would love these to be the center of attention in the middle of the table.

Every time Mr. B and I have a bottle of champagne we always keep the metal cap. We didn't plan on starting this collection. It just kinda happened. And it all started with keeping one cap from a bottle of our wedding champagne. We don't display them or do anything special with them. In fact, they sit in a zip lock bag stored in a kitchen cabinet. I pulled them out today and realized that some of them are quite interesting. Almost little works of art on metal. They make me happy because they remind me of good times shared with the Mr.

Remembering Venice

A few months back I took a trip to Venice, Italy. I stayed in a great central location at the Starhotels Splendid Venice which is just a 5 minute walk from St. Mark's Square and the Rialto Bridge. I had a beautiful room overlooking the intersection of 2 small canals. The location could not be beat. I have stayed with this chain before so I knew I would not be disappointed with their Venice location. And even though it is a chain hotel the design of each is unique to their location.

It is not unlike me to take pictures of the hotels I have stayed in. I take pictures of everything. I managed to take a few not so good pictures of my room and the view but forgot the public areas of the building. As I sit here dreaming of Italy, I cannot forget the wonderful place I called home for 6 days.

The main dining room is a focal point of the hotel. The glass ceiling lets in wonderful light during the day.

There is a small bar and lounge off the entrance. I love the juxtaposition of the wicker chairs in a contemporary setting. It provides the space with a more relaxed feel.

Sweet Treats in San Francisco

Over 80 varieties of handmade sweet treats (chocolates and petite pastries) using 100 year old Swiss recipes are served up in a clean, modern storefront located in a pedestrian only promenade accessible from Market Street. A nice variety of teas and coffees are also available.

When I started this blog I would have never thought that I would have received comments and numerous private emails inquiring about my camera. I use a Nikon DSLR and use 2 different lens depending on what I am shooting. However, I also have an Olympus point and shoot that is usually with me wherever I go. And on one particular morning while having an apple pastry and a cappuccino I was glad I had my trusty friend with me.

Bottega Louie (Downtown L.A)

Bottega Louie is a gem in Downtown Los Angeles and is quickly becoming one of my favorites. It has has a cool, glamorous vibe with its soaring high ceilings and touches of gold gilding. Not only is Bottega Louie a chic restaurant, it also incorporates a small gourmet market and bakery.

The Bib Salad was very light and refreshing. A great choice for a warm summer day in L.A.

Pan sauteed trenné pasta with braised prime, rib eye beef, Tuscan black kale and shaved Parmesan cheese.

My dessert was every bit as good as it looks! The gold embossed napkin with the restaurants initials is a nice touch.

Fresh baked bread is artfully displayed.

The raspberry and blueberry mini tarts are just too good to resist!

Did you know last week was National Farmers Market Week? I read that fact somewhere and that's what prompted me to visit my local farmers market this morning. It is held near the bay so being outside near that water was a perfect way to spend a Sunday morning. I didn't buy any fruits or veggies but brought home some beautiful flowers.

Summer BBQ with Brooks Brothers

Mr. B and I went to South Coast Plaza this afternoon. If you aren't familiar with this mall let me put it to you this way...it is considered by many to be the Rodeo Drive of Orange County, California. Yes, Rodeo Drive as in Beverly Hills. And yes, the same O.C. as in the Real Housewives of Orange County fame (or whatever you want to call it). We walked past the Brooks Brothers store but I stopped dead in my tracks and realized I must go back. The summer BBQ window display at Brooks Brothers caught my attention. I am a sucker for a great display. Retailers love me....

So this is funny...after taking several pictures I was approached by a mall security guard who informed me that "pictures in the public areas are not allowed". For crying out loud...we are in a mall not a museum with national treasures. But I respect the mall rules and I politely turned my camera off and walked away. Plus, we were hungry and it was time for lunch.

Sorry for the glare in the pictures but shooting pictures in mall is sometimes tricky with different light sources.

The artwork is what first caught my eye. I was secretly wanting to take home the crab painting to hang him (maybe a her?) in the lovely Cape Cod cottage I would so love to have. Cliche, yes, but who cares. Maybe someday...

I love how the window designers incorporated the Brooks Brothers logo and the company's trademark seersucker fabric into the throw pillow design.

The faux food and drink are amusing.

The vintage Woodland Jug is a nice touch to help add a bit of authenticity to the display.

We Olive (Long Beach, CA)

I have to admit something. When We Olive first opened its doors in Southern California I wondered how a store selling only olive oil could survive...especially during these tough economic times. Well folks, don't let the name fool you. We Olive is more than just olive oil. Of course they have an amazing selection of oils and balsamic vinegars but they also stock tapenades, mustards, gift items and more. A huge number of the items are actually from California companies.

There are currently 8 charming stores in California. This particular location is situated in the Blemont Shore neighborhood of Long Beach, CA. I just love this area!

I have to agree with the company's quote. There are tasting stations throughout the store but the "Tasting Bar" is center stage. The owners are very warm and make you feel welcome so you don't feel intimidated tasting the products. In fact they encourage it! It makes for a fun shopping experience. The owners are also very knowledgeable about the products they carry and can assist you in making just the right purchase. They helped me choose a chipotle flavored olive oil. It definitely was the right purchase for me because I recently went back to buy a second bottle.

We Olive has a welcoming rustic feel. I love the use of rock along the back wall and freestanding "furniture" adding to the charm and character of the store.

Bath and body products as well as other related gift items are also available.

Raya Restaurant at the Ritz Carlton Hotel

I am sure you figured it out by now...that my first post was a teaser. That dessert you all were drooling over while waiting for me to start contributing to my new blog was some fabulous creation at Raya in the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Laguna Niguel, CA.

The Ritz Carlton in Laguna is one of my favorite places to "decompress". And on one particular day last week I suggested that Mr. B and I head there for a nice lunch. The agenda also included taking a nap on the Adirondack chairs that the Ritz has strategically located on the property, which is perched on a bluff 150 feet above the Pacific Ocean. You see, for me this visit to the Ritz was so much more than just needing to fill my belly. I needed a mini vacation. Coming here for an afternoon always recharges my batteries.

On a sunny day an ice tea was the perfect refreshment. And I always get a thrill out of gnawing on the the sugarcane stick in public!

Sweet Corn Soup

Creamy base with truffled masa dumplings and simple modern garnish. Oh, so heavenly.

Lobster Salad

A perfect portion of baby spinach garnished with a generous helping of fresh Maine lobster on top of a sweet potato puree and chili ancho-port reduction sauce.

Chocolate Tart

The Chocolate Tart was an architectural work of art. The tart features Mexican chocolate, almond crust and garnished with a ball of sour cream sorbet, espresso anglaise and caramelized orange.

The views of the California coastline from the unobstructed dining room windows are phenomenal.

Fresh roses are abundant and line the public areas on the main floor of the hotel.

The hotel is modern yet sophisticated. The muted colors of greys and beige with pops of deep purple are very soothing...everything you would expect of a luxury hotel.

Before taking my nap I managed to snap some pictures of the landscaping surrounding the property. By the way, does anyone know what this plant is?
